Chavez collageToday’s Daily Socialist Propaganda is a tribute to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a true “Socialist” that I admire and had the good fortune to hear him speak live in the Bronx in 2005. He was a Leader that put the needs of the people ahead of the greedy corporations and was able to lift so many of his people out of poverty. I hope that his successor Nicolas Maduro continues in his footsteps and gets elected officially in 30 days.

My own Congressman Jose Serrano is taking some heat for his wonderful words about President Chavez. I thought this part was particularly eloquent “President Chavez was a controversial leader. But at his core he was a man who came from very little and used his unique talents and gifts to try to lift up the people and the communities that reflected his impoverished roots. He believed that the government of the country should be used to empower the masses, not the few. He understood democracy and basic human desires for a dignified life. His legacy in his nation, and in the hemisphere, will be assured, as the people he inspired continue to strive for a better life for the poor and downtrodden.” You can read Congressman Serrano’s entire statement here.

Say what you will about Hugo Chavez but I will always respect an elected official who was so loved that can walk among his own people without bullet-proof glass. He was truly a man of the people, we should be so lucky in this country. I look forward to the nasty comments from the peanut gallery. I just hope that some reasonable people leave some as well.
