SOTU collageI have to be honest, when President Obama started his State of the Union (SOTU) address last night I was feeling a bit queasy. It just seems to me that every time President Obama is in front of the Republican leaders he goes out of his way to reach across the aisle and constantly gets his hand slapped away. Yogi Berra sprung to mind “It’s like deja vu all over again”, I even Tweeted that I would like to see less carrot and more stick. Moments later the POTUS went on offense, “Now, some in this Congress have proposed preventing only the defense cuts by making even bigger cuts to things like education and job training; Medicare and Social Security benefits. That idea is even worse.”,  even I was getting up out of my chair to cheer him on; fractured vertebrae be damned. This joy was short lived however, as President Obama started talking about Simpson-Bowles (as someone who depends on Social Security and Medicare that scares me), don’t think for a minute that Simpson-Bowles is bi-partisan, it’s not. It is “Paul Ryan Lite” and will wind up hurting people by cutting benefits.

All in all I was pretty happy with the POTUS last night. It was a feel good speech for the most part but after seeing the Koch Brothers sponsored responses from Senators Marco Rubio and Rand Paul. I’m looking forward to the opening skit on SNL this week as Senator Rubio was comedy gold during his watered down response. I did Tweet that he looked very nervous and asked if the NRA was holding a gun to his head as he sweated and fumbled through his script.

President Obama’s seemingly Liberal jump to the left made me think that his SOTU could have easily been called the “Baracky Horror Picture Show” and now we wait for the step to the right (color me jaded). I spoke to a number of people today about the speech and most are doubtful that this Congress is going to allow anything to pass. Even John Boehner says that if the POTUS is lucky he will get some type of immigration reform. Tell me what you thought of the speech and what issues you think President Obama can push past the obstructionists.
